Description
Classic Cold War Jet Fighter. F-4 Phantom FGR2s over Blakeney, Norfolk, at the merge with USAF 527th Aggressor Squadron F5Es.
No other jet fighter has enjoyed such a varied and colourful history as the F-4 Phantom II. In every role, fighter, bomber, recce and carrier-borne, the F-4 Phantom has seen it all and done it all, in war and in peace. In RAF service the Phantom was the classic Cold War warrior, defending UK and NATO airspace in the Strike, Ground Attack and Air Defence roles. The “fighter-pilot’s fighter”, the F-4 Phantom was revered for both its performance and firepower and was loved by all who flew it and worked with it.
The Phantoms in this painting are shown in the colourful “Firebird” markings of No56(Fighter) Squadron during the 1980s Cold War years.
